Choosing a DVD For Car Use - The Options Available

Once found almost exclusively in some luxury cars, DVD players can now be added to just about any vehicle. There are many different models on the market, but all can be divided into three basic types: headrest mounted, in-dash and flip down. Each has their advantages and some are much easier to install than others.

Headrest Mounted

This is by far the most popular choice. One or two screens are mounted on the rear side of the front headrests for the use of the backseat passengers. There are two basic options in this category -- you can buy a portable DVD player which has one or more screens which simply attach to the back of the headrests using Velcro or elastic. This has an advantage in that they can be moved easily between vehicles, or used elsewhere. The second option is having the DVD player/screen built in to the headrest itself. It's possible to buy headrests for most models of car with integrated LCD screens, designed to be an exact match for your existing ones. What you lose in portability, you gain in looks; the built-in units are much neater.

In Dash

As the name suggests, this type of DVD player is mounted up front in the dashboard of your car. It goes without saying that they are only to be used when the car is stationary. Most models are designed to fold away when not in use, which is beneficial from a security point of view. Some models can replace your existing car stereo, since they include AM/FM tuners and can play normal CDs. Units with integrated satellite navigation are also available.

Flip Down

Designed to be attached to the roof of the vehicle, some flip down monitors have an integrated DVD player, on other models this must be added separately. They can be a fair bit more challenging to install than other types, and you may well need professional assistance to install them. Other flip down type monitors can be installed in a vehicle's sun visors, though this option is not suitable for large monitors.

Whichever option you decide on, installing a DVD player in your vehicle adds a new dimension to your in-car entertainment. They are perhaps most popular with parents -- a couple of headrest mounted screens and some wireless headphones make for a blissfully peaceful journey!

It has Intel Core 2 Duo processors having a light scribe optical drive. The screen size is 15.4 inches High-definition widescreen which is 1280*800 WXGA display. The screen has a sharp contrast with very excellent colors.

Talking about its configurations, the laptop comes with the Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit ) as the default. Along with this, it is equipped with the Intel Core 2 Duo processors and has a 1.66GHz, 2 MB L2 cache memory and a System Memory of 3GB DDR2 .

It also has a web camera and a microphone, the Altec Lansing stereo speakers, also supporting the Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN network connection.

Very well defined by its name the HP Pavilion dv6700t supports the complete range of the multimedia entertainment and that has become a great success due to the presence of Core 2 Duo processors. It has an nVidia 8400M GS dedicated graphics card with 256MB of RAM giving enough space to the users to play games and media on the notebook.

One more added feature available in this notebook is the launch of a wPrime program which makes it multi-threaded and so the user can simultaneously utilize both the processor cores making it more efficient.

The notebook also has a Media center remote which controls the movies, presentations, music and the photos. The presence of the media buttons also make accessing the DVD and CD player more of a fun as its quite easy to use.

Thus it would be accurate to state that this model of HP in all senses is of an excellent quality justifying its name to the extremes as it comes with a design which performs both the multimedia activities along with the normal stuff expected out of a notebook similar to its configuration.

When Everyone's Right-Where Can We Find the Truth?

Although this question may be a perfect intro for a theological discussion, this article is not religious. The topic here is a debate regarding the disconnect between copyright law and copyright tradition. Traditionalists contend that a consumer has the right to archive or back up his or her digital entertainment media—a process generally called space-shifting or format-shifting. On the other hand, advocates of digital rights management (DRM)—or “copy-protection”—argue that if people are allowed to bypass the built-in security measures on CDs and DVDs, the copyright owners will have no control over their intellectual property.

Both sides of the debate have justifiable claims on legitimacy. One side says they’re for the rights of the consumer, while the other favors the rights of the copyright owner. The underlying problem is based on distrust and assumptions. The traditionalists feel that because the manufacturers of new entertainment media distrust consumers so much they limit the ways consumers can use the materials they legally purchase—making even non-infringing uses impossible. The manufacturers, conversely, assume that any type of format-shifting will have an adverse impact on their market.

The Law

This whole debacle became a major concern with the passing of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998. The law, which was the ratification of two WIPO treaties, amended Title 17 of the United States Code. Prior to 1998, Supreme Court decisions and laws being passed in the annals of Congress were clear and consistent. Unfortunately with the passing of the DMCA (which, in part, makes it illegal to bypass DRM on a CD or DVD for any reason) the commonly accepted practice of changing one’s entertainment media from one format to another became prosecutable.

Anti-DMCA

The traditionalists, advocates of fair use, have quite a bit of legal precedent on their side. Back in the era of Betamax versus VHS, the Supreme Court ruled in Sony v. Universal, with a 5-4 decision, that it was not a copyright infringement for people to use VCRs to record television programs to watch the shows at a more convenient time. This practice was called time-shifting. The court’s justification came from the fourth item in section 107 of Title 17 of the U.S. Code, which gives as a consideration for infringement the following: “the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.” What this means is that if the copy or duplication of the copyrighted work does not devalue it in the market, then it is not an infringement. Essentially, if a copyrighted work is broadcast on public airways, copying it for personal convenience is legal. Following that logic through, if an individual has purchased the rights of use for a product, such as a CD or DVD, as long as he or she does not distribute copies, there should be no justification for prohibiting him or her from format-shifting for convenience.

Pro-DMCA

The fans of DMCA, on the other hand, have only one thing on their side: the law. As the law currently stands, bypassing, or even telling others how to bypass security encryptions is illegal. Copyright owners have always had the sole legal right to duplicate and distribute their copyrighted work. In the years leading up to the passage of the DMCA in 1998, it was already illegal for anyone without the copyright to copy a work and redistribute it. Pirates, as they are commonly called, were already breaking the law. With the passage of the DMCA, the motion picture studios and recording companies thought they would be able to control piracy. Unfortunately, the only group over which they obtained control was their lifeblood—their customers.

The Impact

The built-in security measures, today, are easy to bypass. Because the dispersion of knowledge is so easy in the information age, anyone seeking to bypass DRM has been able to do so. Piracy has not stopped, but one thing has: the age-old right of entertainment media users to conveniently enjoy their media collections as they choose has been revoked. Consumers can no longer determine the way they enjoy their media legally. That decision is made for them in the programming department of the studios that produce the CDs or DVDs. In many cases, DRM has even inhibited legal use licensed DVD and CD players. Gone are the days of enjoying media an individual purchased on a DVD or CD through other devices, such as: a car’s tape deck, a computer, an MP3 player, a video iPod, a portable DVD player or whatever comes next. Now, being a technologically up-to-date consumer is criminal.

Where Can We Find the Truth?

So to answer the question…the truth can be found in the U.S. Code. Regardless of how little sense the Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes in real life, it is the law. Until their constituents let them know what they should do, members of Congress won’t see any reason to fix it.

Potential Remedies

Several bills are in Congress, dealing with this issue. Congressman Rick Boucher of Virginia has drafted a bill that would restore balance to the copyright laws in America. It is called the Digital Media Consumers’ Rights Act (DMCRA). The bill deals with a few other aspects beyond archiving, such as properly labeling CDs or DVDs that contain certain computer-damaging DRM so consumers do not innocently try to listen to or watch their media on their computers only to have them crash.

Congressman Lamar Smith of Texas has also introduced a bill called the Section 115 Reform Act (SIRA). Congressman Smith’s aim is to make entertainment media available to consumers in multiple formats, while ensuring artists and copyright owners are compensated. Regardless of how you feel on the subject, contact your congressmen and senators, reference Rep. Boucher’s and Rep. Smith’s bills and let them hear your thoughts. Again, if they don’t hear from their constituents, Congress will never know how to represent them.

South West Limousines

There are many limousines available for rental in the South West of England in various types, styles and colours. The South West is the largest by area of all the regions of England and extends from Gloucestershire and Wiltshire to Cornwall. The main cities and towns in the South West of England that are most commonly used for limousine hire are Bristol, Plymouth, Bournemouth, Poole, Swindon, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Exeter, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare, Salisbury, Taunton and Weymouth. The limousines available for hire in the South West range from Chrysler C300 Baby Bentley limousines to Hummer H2 limos and huge Party Buses.

The limousines in the South West of England are rented for many different reasons but the main events and occasions are hen nights, stag nights, corporate events, airport transfers, birthdays, school proms and weddings.

Cornwall and Devon and in particular Plymouth has an excellent range of stretch Lincoln Town Cars in many different colours. These include traditional white stretch Lincoln Town Cars, gorgeous pink Lincoln Town Cars and even a silver stretch Lincoln Town Car. Some of these limos are only one of five ever made in the world, the others can be found in Las Vegas, such is the quality of these limos. One pink Lincoln Town Car, named the pink crush has an all pink interior with karaoke. Other eight seater limousines include a brand new Chrysler C300 Baby Bentley limousine in a stunning metallic silver colour and Fire Engine limousines complete with flashing lights and sirens. The Fire Engine limousines are very popular with hen nights, girlie birthdays and children's parties.

Perhaps the most popular limousines and certainly the most requested in Cornwall and Devon are the Hummer limos. Both H3 and H2 Hummer limousines are available in the area ranging from a pink or white Hummer H3 limo capable of seating up to ten people to huge 16 seater Hummer H2 limos in black, white and even black and orange. There is also a massive white 6 wheeler Hummer H2 limousine that is the only one in the South West. All the Hummer limos come equipped with mirrored ceiling, plasma TV's, DVD players, CD players and many more gadgets and gizmos.

Wiltshire, Somerset including Bristol, Gloucestershire and Cheltenham equally have an impressive array of Hummer H2 limos, Lincoln Navigator limos, Jeep Excursion limousines, Chrysler C300 Baby Bentley limos and many more. But perhaps the flagship limousine in the area has to be the massive Party Bus limousine. The Party Bus limo is a huge 28 seater vehicle kitted out with all sorts of gadgets and gizmos such as a Playboy Den full of Playboy paraphernalia, a Poker Den complete with poker table, poker chips and Playboy playing cards, dance pole and even an on-tap bar. This massive Party Bus was available in Bristol until quite recently but sadly this amazing limousine is currently undergoing a changeover. It remains to be seen where this limousine ends up but everyone hopes it can remain in the South West of England.

Ten Things You Should Do If Your CD Changer Will Not Play Discs Or If They Skip

Here are ten things that will help you if your CD changer will not play or if they skip.

1) Before installing your CD changer ensure you have removed the transportation screws, (where fitted). These will be highly visible on the exterior of the CD Changer.

2) Ensure the angle mounting adjustment screws found at either side of the CD changer have been set correctly according to the angle at which the CD changer has been mounted. Consult your handbook for details.

3) Check to ensure that your discs are clean and not damaged. Try other discs in the position of the disc that will not play. For example if your CD changer is failing to play (disc 1) try a different CD (preferably an original CD) in slot No.1. This is especially true if you are using CD-R or CD/RW copied discs as these are often the culprits if a cheap CD-R is used. The other reason is if it has been burned at too fast a speed or if the copier had not finalized the disc completely.

4) If you have used Velcro to mount your CD changer, please ensure that you have mounted it horizontally. This is so that a larger surface area makes contact to provide optimum stability preventing your discs from skipping. CD Changer manufacturers recommend using the included brackets but we have never experienced problems using Velcro if you mount the CD Changer horizontally ensuring that it is solid.

5) Use a CD laser cleaner disc. These are available from any music store and when played in your CD changer will clean the laser and correct any problems of a dirty CD laser such as discs not playing or skipping.

6) If the changer magazine ejects, then power is getting to your CD changer, so this will not be the issue. So now disconnect the CD changer data lead from the CD changer and leave disconnected for 1 minute, then reconnect and test for correct operation. This will often reset your CD changer.

7) If you are using a CD changer that has an in-line fuse such as a Pioneer, check that this fuse isn't blown. If the CD changer has an earth fly-lead, check this has a clean, tight contact with the car chassis. The majority of CD changers have the live and earth wires built into the CD data lead.

8) If you are using an Alpine CHA-S634 CD Changer in conjunction with a KCA-130B (Ai-NET to M-Bus convertor), ensure the small switch found next to the "Eject" button has been set to position No. 2. The CD changer leads must be disconnected when moving this switch. Please consult your manual for more details.

9) If you are using a Kenwood CD Changer ensure the small switch, found next to the "Eject" button on some models, has been set to the correct position for the Kenwood radio model you have connected it to. Consult your handbook for more details.
10) If all the above does not remedy the situation, we'll have only three suspects left: A faulty radio, CD data lead or the CD Changer itself. The only way to rule out the CD changer and CD lead is by trying replacements one at a time. However, please ensure you have followed 1 to 9 above.

If the problem is still present after following all the above, please, consult a car audio expert.

The Best Mobile Electronics Upgrades For Your Car, Truck Or SUV

Whether navigating city streets at the height of rush hour or the wide open countryside on a sunny day, the road can be long...and with young passengers on board, even longer. But, no matter how endless the trip, you can stay entertained and keep the peace in the backseat at the same time with some simple and affordable electronic upgrades. If you still have a cassette deck in your car or truck, this article is for you.

Electronic upgrades range from simple to highly complex, but the best upgrades require almost no installation. And, the number one upgrade hailed by parents around the world is a headrest monitor. The current thinking regarding kids and television is that less is better. But on a long drive, in an enclosed space, where escape is impossible, who among us isn't willing to compromise? Today's headrest monitors feature a range of LCD screen sizes that offer a bright, bold picture with a wide array of input options. In addition, many systems feature a set of monitors that work independently of one another, keeping everyone quietly entertained. With simple installation and a sleek look that matches the shape, fabric and color of your stock headrests, car monitors make a valuable and attractive upgrade to your car or truck.

Many units even feature a built-in car DVD player, eliminating the hassle of cords running throughout the cockpit or batteries that die after only a few hours. The wiring is conveniently hidden behind the headrest post for a seamless appearance. Many of the car DVD players currently on the market also feature innovative touch-screen controls, easily reached from the car seat without having to unbuckle.

So, with the kids occupied, why not enjoy the trip yourself? Take your entire collection of music on the road and do it without installing an expensive new sound system. If you're still using cassettes, you'll be disappointed to know: even CDs are a thing of the past now. But, with an iPod car adapter, you can plug your digital jukebox right into your car stereo in one of two convenient ways. The first is with a simulated cassette that attaches to your iPod through a thin cable and plays the audio signal as though it were a tape. But if wireless is more your thing, you can also purchase a small FM radio transmitter that broadcasts the signal from your iPod straight into your car's antenna. iPod car adaptors provide the highest possible fidelity and feature the added bonus of charging your digital music player at the same time. Simple to install and even simpler to use, these quick and affordable solutions will have you rocking out in no time, and at a fraction of what the dealer would have charged for something similar.

A word of caution: don't be tricked into a lo-fi iPod FM transmitter. The sound will be riddled with distortion from interference and make your music sound flat and layered with static. For the best possible result: upgrade to a digital iPod car adaptor, delivering each note in crisp, clear, CD-quality sound.

Speakers - Tips For Buying The Best

The speaker is the most important link in the audio chain for the simple reason that the end result that every audio component aims for is to improve the listener's experience.

So which speaker is best for you? It depends on a number of factors...

... The level of setup you intend to have.

... Your willingness or otherwise to modify the spaces where your factory speakers fit.

... The amount of bucks you are willing to spend.

You can find other reasons. However, these will, or rather should help shape, your buying decision.

Once you've decided on these, the following will help you get the speakers that fit into your plans.

RMS: RMS stands for Root Mean Square, which is an accurate means of measuring and comparing the power of a speaker. If you already have an amplifier, make sure this value is not more than 3/4 of the amp's rating. Your speakers will love you for it.

Peak Power Handling: This represents what a speaker can handle in short bursts, that is, for few milliseconds. A speaker cannot handle power at this rating for sustained periods.

Efficiency (or sensitivity): The higher the efficiency the more the sound per input. Here's a rule you can follow...

If a speaker has an efficiency/sensitivity rating of 81Db, it means that it will produce 81Db of sound 39" or 1 meter from the speaker when there is an input of 1 watt. Each time the power input is doubled, there is an increase of 3Db in sound. So if the power handling of a speaker is 128 watts, it will have a maximum sound output of 102Db. You can do the maths if you're interested...

So if you have limited amplification, go for higher efficiency. If you've got lots of amp power, then you can go for less.

Round or oval speakers: Oval speakers have more area and so move more air thus producing more bass. This is important if space is a big issue for you. However, it must be noted that at higher sound levels, these oval speaker drivers are more likely to distort.

Now go shop for your speakers with confidence.

In-Car DVD Players are Hot Commodities

One of the hottest consumer commodities at the moment is the DVD. And now the DVD player is set to makes inroads into the automobile accessory market as more and more manufacturers release their new models. It might appear like an unnecessary luxury to many, but for those of us who have children and have experienced a long road trip with them, a DVD player in the car is almost a necessity. There is nothing like a good movie to distract the kids from the boredom of a long journey.

There are quite a few choices in the car DVD category. They range from the budget portable players to high end in-dash models complete with Satellite radio. Your choices will be likely dictated not only by cost, the type of vehicle you own but also how much control you want over the viewing.

The choices for in-car DVD players include:

Portable. These are stand alone systems, much like a notebook and rely on their own speakers. They are fairly affordable and offer the advantage of complete portability and can be used outside of the car.
In-dash models that offer radio, DVD, CD, MP3 all in a single integrated unit. Because they are mounted on the dash, the screen might be a little difficult for those in the back to see with ease, especially in bright sunlight. But all the controls are in the front allowing you as the parent to control volume and what is viewed.
Roof mounted. These offer great visibility for the back seat, but not tend to cause the front passenger to get a crick in their neck trying to view the overhead screen. Generally meant for larger vehicles such as SUV's and minivans.

In-car DVD players can be lifesavers on long trips. As we've all experienced before, on such trips games such as "I spy" can only go for so long before your kids become bored. By adding a DVD player into mix, you give yourself an option to distract the kids on those long journeys and perhaps give you time to relax a little during the journey.

How the M3 and Z3 Speakers are Engineered to Work with the BMW Car Stereo

BMW owners know that their cars come with many special features. Leather interiors and superior handling are commonly enjoyed. Perhaps you are in possession of the new M3 Coupe, with its V-8, 414 horsepower engine and flared fenders. Drivers in love with a sports drive likely have a BMW Z3 Coupe or Roadster sitting in their garages. The control you get behind the wheel of a Z3 is what many sports car drivers relish. Many savor their morning and evening commutes much more now that they have chosen their BMWs. The ride in your BMW can be made even more pleasurable when you use quality M3 speakers or Z3 speakers in conjunction with your car's audio system. Speakers can make or break your enjoyment of your music as you drive along, so it makes sense to invest in speakers that do their job well.

Speakers in your vehicle, or anywhere else, are the go-between to convert the digital signals stored in various formats into sounds that you can hear. Sound is created by changes in air pressure that produces a wave that, when it reaches your eardrum, vibrates it, which our brains receive as a sound. Your favorite musical artist, for example, sings his or her song into a microphone, and it is encoded as an electrical bit or byte on whatever recording media is being used. When you play these electrical signals back on your iPod, for example, the amplifier in your iPod sends the electrical signal to the speaker, which turns it into vibrations that your ears can pick up as sounds, and thus you can hear your song.

A good set of speakers is quite sensitive to changes in air pressure, which results in a better quality sound when your songs play on those speakers. Speakers consist of a diaphragm, voice coil, magnets, and some type of enclosure. The diaphragm, which is also known as a driver, is held in suspension over the voice coil, which is attached to the bottom of the diaphragm. Under the diaphragm and the voice coil is the permanent magnet. Vibrations to the diaphragm are caused when electricity flows through the voice coil. Fluctuations in the electrical current cause the vibrations to occur in the voice coil, because the electromagnet of the voice coil is both attracted to and repelled by the permanent magnet beneath it. Thus, vibrations in the diaphragm occur, based on the electrical signal from your song, which leads to the production of sound waves. Because higher-pitched sounds are produced at higher frequencies of vibration, those sounds are best produced on a driver designed to accommodate more vibration. Those are tweeters. Low sounds come across as most lifelike on drivers called woofers, while midrange drivers capture the midrange frequencies best.

It's the simple things in life that can make it most enjoyable, and excellent sound produced from M3 speakers and Z3 speakers is one of those that mean so much.

Installing Aftermarket Head Units

Upgrading the sound system is usually one of the first modifications attempted when we talk about car customization. The best place to start is with a good head unit. If you plan to install it yourself, read on for some technical tips from our experience installers.

You will need a few tools to do the job right, so start by collecting some screwdrivers (flat head and phillips head), a socket set, wire cutters, wire splitters, butt connectors or heat shrinking sleeves, electrical tape, zip ties, solder and a soldering iron, and some patience.

The first thing I would do before installing I would suggest buying the stereo wiring harness for your vehicle application. This will make the installation easier for you if you are a beginner, and it allows for easier replacement of the stock radio (if you choose to sell the vehicle in the future) and swapping or upgrading to a different aftermarket head unit.

Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery. This will ensure that you don't accidentally cross any wires and burn out a new piece of equipment. Next, remove the old head unit. If you need to see how this is done on your specific vehicle, you can look up your vehicles application on installdr.com. This is a great resource for seeing pictures of how to remove the head unit. Once it is loose, disconnect the wiring harness and the antenna from the head unit and remove it completely.

There are two types of wiring harnesses you can get. There is the universal wiring harness that connects to your vehicles existing wiring harness, and has the unfinished wire ends that connect to the color coded wires of your new head unit. There is also a wiring harness that has a harness on both ends, and just clicks in place on both sides. These are the easiest to install, but can be harder ot find to match your vehicle to the head unit. Most wiring harnesses are the universal type, so we will focus on those. If you have obtained the wiring harness, you will notice the color coded wires in the back of the head unit. The wires on the head unit and wiring harness should match. The head unit wires and the wiring harness wires will be partially spliced for easy installation. There are several good ways to connect the wires. One way is to use butt connectors, which crimp the wires within a connector. These can be picked up almost anywhere that sells/installs head units, or at Walmart, etc. My favorite way requires a soldering iron and heat shrinking sleeves. Twist the wires together tightly. Apply just enough solder to weld the two wires together. Now fold them over parallel to one of the wires. Slide the sleeve over the connection and heat it with a heat gun or good hair dryer. I have had to rewire or repair systems where butt connectors were used, but this could be installer error, and not a problem with the connectors themselves. I have never had any of the soldered connections fail.

Once all the connections are made, and the sleeves heated and shrunk in place, I like to take a zip tie and tie them all together. Clip the excess zip tie for a clean finished look. Connect the wiring harness of the head unit to the wiring harness connected to the vehicle. Plug in the antenna (you may find you need an antenna adapter in some applications). Now slide the head unit in place, but don't attach it yet. Reconnect the negative battery cable and turn on the head unit (make sure the key is turned to the ACC position). It should be functioning properly at this point. If you plan on adding an amp, or have purchased one for this setup, turn the unit off and connect the RCA cables. Run them through the dash to the floorboard and to the amp (more on how to successfully do this in future articles).
